According to a poll, the top ten largest media houses account for over two-thirds of all online news content viewed by Britons.
As per an assessment of mobile and desktop device page views in the UK in 2019, they produced 70 percent of the traffic share compared to the next 140 largest publications.
Currently, the most popular newspaper brand and media group is the BBC with an audience of 38 million people while also reaching 76% of all internet users. The BBC was joined by the Mirror and the Sun in the top three of news media organizations that interacted with at least 50% of the British population.
The Mail Online interacted with 22.5 million people, which accounted for 45% reach. The Independent interacted with 19.3 users constituting a 39% interaction rate. Among the local brands, Manchester Evening News was the highest placed with a 17 million reader base that accounts for 34% reach.
For our ranking, we looked at Ipsos’ ratings of the top 500 internet organizations and selected the 50 largest that provide a significant news or journalistic offering. The figures show the total unduplicated number of people who visited the organization’s websites and applications in a given month and include all traffic, not only news traffic.
The ABCe analysis notes that online media is also catching up with the traditional publishers, with websites such as Newzit and the news aggregation site DMGT seeing a notable rise since they were launched. In addition, local new provider InYourArea has also grown exponentially with over 20% reach and 11 million unique visitors each month.
In most cases, the growth is attributed to increased access to digital platforms. Online media is providing exclusive access to various stories including politics and the economy, which means readers are eager to return to the website of choice for news coverage.
