Reddit has for long published news articles through its standalone site Upvoted and through the social media platformâs groups. Reddit includes aggregations of the most popular user-generated content turned into stories on its own sites. The platform seems to be wrestling back control from traditional media firms that frequently lift ideas and news items from Reddit boards, sometimes without crediting.
Now, a study has been done detailing the sites with most submitted news items on Reddit. In comparison to any other UK newspaper website, The Guardian presently has the most stories on Reddit. For the newspaper, it is good news because other competitors have their news aggregated on other sites at an equally high rate. For example, The Times tops the StumbleUpon List while the Telegraph leads other news media on the Digg League.
The Guardianâs lead is based on the number of results from news media when a user searches for the different newspaperâs URLs on Reddit. Interestingly, The Guardian was the most referenced on Reddit ever and in the last seven days. While the submissions reveal The Guardian is a highly popular source of submissions, other news media firms are also joining the band. For example, the Daily Telegraph has seen an upsurge in submissions over the last week, nearly matching The Guardianâs popularity.
For other newspapers like The Express, The Financial Times, The Mirror, and The Sun, they still have a long way to catch up. Engaging the social media users and increasing the submission rates for their content could take some time. While the data on the submissions may be overstated because of external links that include the newspaper URLs, it still shows the Guardian remains the trusted source of news on Reddit. Other newspaper media houses should look at the Guardian to increase their engagement.
